AirMini Too Loud? How the QuietConnect Kit Cuts the Noise (and Fits Any Mask)

By Clay Rollyson

Short answer: Yes, the ResMed AirMini is a little louder than most home CPAPs. The AirMini QuietConnect Kit adds an inline acoustic muffler that cut airflow noise by up to 10 decibels in our sound meter testing, and a universal connector that lets you use any standard CPAP mask. It's $57.97 and doesn't need a prescription.

The AirMini is the best travel CPAP on the market. It weighs 0.66 lbs, fits in your palm, and runs on the same motor technology as the AirSense 11. But if you've slept next to one, you already know its two biggest complaints: it's noisier than the machine on your nightstand at home, and it only works with a handful of ResMed masks.

We built the QuietConnect Kit to fix both at once. Here's what's in it, how much quieter it actually gets, and how to set it up. If it's not the right fit for you, we've also rounded up the other AirMini accessories worth owning.

Why the AirMini is louder than a home CPAP

It comes down to size. A home machine like the AirSense 11 has a much larger housing, which gives the manufacturer room to baffle and absorb the sound of the blower and the air moving through it. The AirMini squeezes a full-strength motor into something smaller than a phone, so there's very little space left to quiet things down.

The result is a machine that sounds fine in a hotel room with the AC running, but that some users and bed partners notice on a quiet night. The most common description we hear is a "whoosh" of air, especially at higher pressures. That airflow noise is exactly what the QuietConnect Kit targets.

What the QuietConnect Kit is

The AirMini QuietConnect Kit is a CPAPmyway accessory kit that replaces the AirMini's proprietary tube-and-mask setup with a universal one, with a sound muffler built into the air path. It does two jobs:

−10 dB
Up to 10 decibels quieter
Roughly half as loud to your ears
Any
mask, any brand
ResMed, Fisher & Paykel, Philips and more

Everything in the kit is a comfort accessory, so no prescription is required to order it.

What's in the box

  • Universal tube connector. Snaps into the AirMini's air outlet the same way the factory tube does, and converts it to a standard fitting. This is the same idea as our Universal AirMini Tube Adapter.
  • Ribbed acoustic muffler. Installs inline right after the connector. Its ribbed interior breaks up the airflow noise before it travels up the tube toward you.
  • Slim 15mm CPAP tube, 6 ft. Lightweight and flexible for travel, with standard 22mm cuffs on the ends so it fits any mask. The 15mm bore matches the AirMini's own tubing.
  • Heat moisture exchanger (HME). Waterless humidification that sits right before your mask, capturing moisture from your exhaled breath and returning it on the next breath to help prevent dry mouth.

How much quieter does it get?

In our in-house testing, the QuietConnect Kit dropped the reading on our sound meter by up to 10 decibels compared to the standard AirMini setup.

That number is bigger than it sounds. Decibels are logarithmic, and a 10 dB drop is generally perceived by the human ear as about half as loud. It's the difference between noticing the machine and forgetting it's there.

Your results will depend on your pressure setting, your mask, and the room you're in. Higher pressures move more air, so that's where people tend to notice the biggest difference.

Use the mask you actually like

Out of the box, the AirMini only connects to a short list of ResMed masks (the AirFit P10, N20, N30, F20 and their AirTouch versions), and each one needs its own AirMini setup pack. Everything else, including top-of-head masks like the AirFit N30i and P30i, the AirFit F40, and every Fisher & Paykel and Philips mask, won't connect.

The QuietConnect Kit removes that restriction. Because the tube ends in standard 22mm cuffs, it connects to any standard CPAP mask on the market. If you already have a mask you sleep well in at home, you can now bring it on the road with you.

How to set it up

Setup takes a couple of minutes. Working outward from the machine, connect the pieces in this order:

  1. AirMini machine. Remove the factory AirMini tube if it's attached.
  2. Universal tube connector. Line up the slits with the notches in the AirMini's air outlet and push until it clicks in.
  3. Ribbed muffler. Attach it directly to the connector.
  4. Slim 15mm tube. Connect one end to the muffler.
  5. Heat moisture exchanger. Attach it to the mask end of the tube.
  6. Your CPAP mask. Connect your mask to the HME.

Then open the AirMini app and set your mask type to the closest category to what you're wearing: Pillows, Nasal, or Full Face. This matters because the machine uses the mask setting to tell the difference between your mask's normal venting and an actual leak. Run it for a minute before bed and listen for any whistling at the connections.

Cleaning and care

  • Tube, muffler and connector: wash weekly with mild soap and warm water, then let them air dry completely before reconnecting.
  • HME: never wash it. Water ruins the filter media inside. Remove it before you wash the rest of the kit.
  • Muffler: because it's designed to disrupt airflow, it can collect a little condensation. Make sure it's fully dry after washing.

The honest trade-offs

We'd rather you know these up front:

  • It's not a ResMed product. The QuietConnect Kit is a CPAPmyway accessory, and ResMed doesn't test with or recommend third-party connectors. Our bench testing has looked clean, but it's our testing, not ResMed's.
  • You won't use HumidX. HumidX cartridges only fit inside the mask-specific AirMini connectors, so this kit uses a universal HME instead. It does the same job in a shape that fits standard fittings.
  • It's a little bigger. The muffler and a 6 ft tube take up slightly more room in your bag than the factory AirMini setup. The whole kit still packs down small.
  • Check your data after switching. Any time you change your setup, compare a week of numbers in the AirMini app before and after.

Still deciding on an AirMini?

If you landed here because you're researching the AirMini and the noise was one of your concerns, the QuietConnect Kit takes care of it. Here's the rest of the picture:

  • It's genuinely tiny. 5.4" x 3.3" x 2" and 0.66 lbs. It fits in a carry-on or even a large jacket pocket.
  • Full-size performance. AutoSet technology adjusts your pressure through the night, and it uses the same motor technology as the AirSense 11.
  • No water to carry. Humidification is waterless, so there's no chamber to fill or spill.
  • Works worldwide. The power supply handles 100 to 240V, so you only need a plug adapter overseas.
  • App-controlled. Settings and sleep data live in the AirMini app over Bluetooth.

The AirMini machine ships without a mask or tubing, so the easiest way to start is the ResMed AirMini Travel Bundle. It includes the AirMini, your choice of compatible mask, tubing, HumidX, filters, the power supply, and both a clamshell case and a travel bag, so you can use it the night it arrives. It also comes with a 30-day mask exchange if your first mask isn't the right fit, and it's on sale right now for a limited time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ResMed AirMini loud?

It's a little louder than most home CPAPs. The AirMini fits a full-strength motor into a very small housing, which leaves little room to muffle the sound of the airflow. Many people don't mind it, but light sleepers and bed partners sometimes notice it on a quiet night.

How much quieter does the QuietConnect Kit make the AirMini?

In our in-house testing, the kit reduced the sound meter reading by up to 10 decibels compared to the standard AirMini setup. A 10 dB drop is generally perceived as about half as loud. Results vary with your pressure, mask, and room.

Can I really use any CPAP mask with the QuietConnect Kit?

Yes. The included slim tube has standard 22mm cuffs, so it connects to any standard CPAP mask, including ResMed top-of-head masks like the AirFit N30i and P30i, the AirFit F40, and masks from Fisher & Paykel, Philips Respironics and other brands.

Do I need a prescription for the QuietConnect Kit?

No. The kit is made up entirely of comfort accessories, so no prescription is required. A prescription is only required for the AirMini machine itself.

Can I still use HumidX with the QuietConnect Kit?

No. HumidX cartridges only fit inside the mask-specific AirMini connectors, which this kit replaces. The kit includes a universal heat moisture exchanger (HME) that provides waterless humidification the same way, placed right before your mask.

What order do the pieces connect in?

Working outward from the machine: AirMini, universal tube connector, ribbed muffler, slim 15mm tube, heat moisture exchanger, then your CPAP mask.

Can I wash the HME?

No. Water ruins the filter media inside the HME. It's a disposable part. Remove it before washing the tube, muffler and connector with mild soap and warm water.

Is the QuietConnect Kit made by ResMed?

No. It's a CPAPmyway accessory kit. ResMed doesn't make or recommend third-party connectors for the AirMini. We test our kits in-house, and we recommend comparing your data in the AirMini app for a week after switching any part of your setup.

Does the AirMini come with a mask and tubing?

No. The AirMini machine is sold without a mask or tubing. The ResMed AirMini Travel Bundle includes the machine, a compatible mask, tubing, HumidX, filters and travel cases, so you can use it the night it arrives.
